Preparing For Your First Archery Tournament

From the Blog of International Judge Bob Pian – a great how-to of preparing for your first tournament:

Heading to the first “real” tourney: Deciding to take part in that first tournament is often more of an accident than by design. Someone mentions that an event might be fun or worthwhile and suggest giving it a try. Now what? A book could be written about tournament preparation and competition. All events are different, but following are some steps you can take to help you feel more prepared.

Ask the Question: Am I ready? If you don’t need to go behind the target to look for your arrows after most every end and can score arrows on a target face, write the values and add arrow values, you are ready to try competition.

Registration and membership: The amount of tournament advertising and information varies. Most events have registration forms that can be downloaded and printed. When in doubt, contact the tournament host. Most tournament organizers will be delighted to hear of an archer that is taking part in their first event and are more than willing to provide information. Tournaments often neglect to offer “guest” or “novice” categories. Ask! Most tournaments are eager to fit you in where they can.

Membership can affect who is eligible to take part. Levels of tournaments include, club, local, state, regional, national, team trials and international. Where there is no specific membership requirement information, contact the tournament organizers and inquire.

Dress code and equipment: Showing up ready to compete requires the archer to be in proper dress and have equipment that is compliant with the rules. Events have different dress code requirement just as there are different membership requirements. Compliance is easy: for complete information on the USA Archery dress code, click here.

Equipment rules can be a concern for those new to FITA style archery. If at all possible ask a judge or an experienced target archer to explain the equipment rules before the day of your competition. For compound archers, common compliance issues are bows in excess of 60 pounds, multiple aiming points, a battery lighted sight pin, or arrows that are over 9.3mm (2315s). Recurve bows rarely have issues except when an archer has left a training aid on the bow such as a sight level or a sight tube over 2cm in length. For complete rules and regulations, click here.

Schedules: Schedules indicate the starting time. Experienced archers arrive on site early to claim seating space, review posted information, set up their equipment, hang their target face, stretch, and get situated before the day’s events begin. Think of the remainder of the schedule as a general concept versus something that is fixed. Check daily for schedule updates.

Think of the tournament as starting with check-in, equipment inspection and official practice. Official practice is the time for archers to become familiar with the range and relax a bit before the first scoring arrow. It is unsettling to not have time to practice because of a delay. It is disappointing to have prepared and spent money only to perform poorly because of rushing caused by corner cutting.

Tournament delays happen for a variety of reasons including inclement weather, power failures and protest deliberations. For a local tournament, plan to arrive at least 45 minutes to an hour ahead of your scheduled shooting time. If you’re traveling out of town, plan to arrive the day before and depart the day after if at all possible.

Travel: Getting to and from the event is typically an individual effort. Plan your trip just as you would any other important event. Events can take place in obscure places including those that have no address. Give yourself even more time to find your way. Many tournament hosts help guide archers to the venue by displaying a FITA target face. One of the primary roles of a friend, family member or parent is to “get lunch”. Many bring a cooler with beverages and snacks and a sandwich.

Arrival: There are several things to do when you arrive. Get a lay of the land. Find out where and when check-in and equipment inspection will be. If competing in an outdoor tournament, you’ll find that many are interested to learn their target assignment in order to practice on their target. At an indoor competition, you’ll want to secure a seat and a spot for your bow, and get a sense of the lighting on your target. Friends and family are encouraged to volunteer with set up and take down and during the tourney. Becoming a “friend of the tournament” can be very beneficial; being around the folks that are running the event can provide some insight on what to expect.

Competition: Typically, the process of shooting and scoring is easy to follow. There is usually time to have questions answered during practice. The most common interaction with an official is to ask for an arrow call when the target group does not agree.

Archers, including those in youth divisions, should be prepared to call arrow values and mark scorecards legibly. Finally, archers should be able to add and check the addition of others. The integrity of the tournament depends on the accuracy of the scorecards. The efficiency of the tournament depends on the archers’ ability to score and total quickly.

End of the competition day: Scorecards should only be turned in after archers check and double check the math, and ensure that all required information is properly recorded. Scorecards are required to be signed by the archer and others in the scoring group including the score recorder. Do not leave the group until all off the cards in the group are fully checked and signed. Scorecards must be turned in on time to be a part of the results. Note that in order for your score to set a new record, your scorecard must be signed by a judge.
The best way to learn the tournament process is to dive in and take part!

Paseo Vista Fall League Finals

The Paseo Vista Archery Club Fall League was completed on Sunday, December 1st. This was an adults only league that included Compound and Recurve archers shooting together. It was open to all archers and you did not have to be a member of the Paseo Club to shoot. 12 Archers competed in the 7 week league all shooting at 30 meters using a 80cm-6 ring target face. A shooting handicap format was used so that all archers, regardless of skill level or equipment had an equal chance.

Some of the goals of the league were to offer a fun low-pressure environment shooting with fellow archers, and to expose new archers to a more structured setting they will experience in tournaments. Missing from our leagues are the clocks, horns, and shot time-limits, but it was apparent during the finals the mere word of "finals" or "championship" introduced some self-imposed pressure for many of the participants. Proving just how important the "mental game" is in this sport.

Many Archers were also able to use their scores for the USA Archery Adult Achievement Pin Awards Program that Paseo Offers to Adult Archers for a minimal fee.

The shooting handicap format was intended to both level the playing field and the reward archers that showed improvement over the course of the league. We saw Gail Spore display a 200+ point improvement over the course of 7-weeks and take the championship, and Michelle Wolfe improve over 100-points to take 4th. Both Gail (recurve) and Michelle (compound) have been shooting a bow less than a year!

Final standings
--------------------
Gail Spore - 702
Kevin Bailey - 607
Gary Yamaguchi - 594
Michelle Wolfe - 593
Dennis Swartzfager - 590
Mike Lee - 588
Saeid Aghili - 587
Lee Wolfe - 585
Cameron Rollins - 564
Peggy Irelan - 557
Mike Dyster - 544
Judy Dyster - 478

Only 9-points separated 3rd through 8th place!

Over the next several weeks the Paseo Vista Adult program coordinators Lee Wolfe and Saeid Aghili will begin planning the Spring Adult League which will start in January. Feel free to contact Lee and Saeid at Saturday practices and propose ideas for how this league should be setup. Some interesting suggestions have already been made, like for a 30-meter / 50-meter format where half the arrows are shot at each distance.

If the league continues to grow, we can also consider compound and recurve divisions. We also have the opportunity to supply several sessions of archery instruction for those that are interested.

The meeting will be held on December 18th at 6:00pm at Chino Bandidos. Chino Bandidos is at the South/East corner of Chandler Blvd and Dobson, behind the Walgreens. Address is 1825 W Chandler Blvd, Chandler, AZ 85224. Dinner is on your own and they serve a unique combination of Asian/Mexican food. Sounds odd, but it is very good. They meeting should last about 2 hours, depending on questions.

We hope to see everyone there!>

USAA Junior Dream Team
USAA Junior Dream Team (JDT) Program Invitation:

The JDT is open to junior RECURVE archers between the ages of 12-13 and around 18 (ends at high school graduation). It is a high level archery training program led by US National Head Coach KiSik Lee. Local archers who have in the past, or who continue to participate in this program include Kiley Larrick, Nathan Yamaguchi, Karissa Yamaguchi, and Andrew Mateo. Coach Mel Nichols and Gary Yamaguchi participate as coaches in the program. All participants must agree to learn the National Training System (NTS), and to shoot at tournaments using the NTS system. Successful applicants will attend at least two week-long training camps at one of the Olympic Training Centers per year, as well as agree to document their training on a weekly basis, serve as representatives of USA Archery and the United States, and to compete in national ranking events. Typically, JDT archers place at or near the top of youth archery events in the USA, and many go on to become Resident Athletes at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista CA, south of San Diego.

For 2012, the JDT Selection Camp will be held at the Chula Vista OTC from November 29th to December 2nd. Anyone who can meet the qualifications for the camp and who is interested in trying out for the team, please ask them to submit their application as soon as possible. Anyone who has questions can address them to Gary Yamaguchi at gyflyfish@cox.net The deadline for submissions is September 24th, 2012.
2012 EJN and NTC - the Arizona Story submitted by Gary Yamaguchi

by Gary Yamaguchi

TOURNAMENT VENUE
The tournament was hosted by the combined efforts of USA Archery and Butler County. Butler County did a great job of setting up a nice field and welcoming the archers. Banners from the local roadway luminaire poles saying “Welcome Archers” greeted everyone driving past Joyce Park. No lunches were available on site but these could be ordered a day in advance. The local Cincinnati JOAD Olympians club sponsored a concession booth where drinks and snacks could be purchased. Double gold Olympic medalist and archery great Darrell Pace provided much additional support, including supplying water to all of the archers. CJO coach Jim Coombe brought out his metal detector and worked almost full time, finding many, many arrows.

Late signups necessitated the switching of compound and recurve target assignments -- leaving many parents who had come early to snag first-row tent locations stranded in the wrong viewing locations. As the tents were already pitched three deep at the time of the target reassignments, there wasn’t much that could be done. Cooperation among our local Ohio hosts (the McLaughlin family) and the Desert Sky Archers Scott Waldrop enabled a simple tent switch to be done that accommodated most of the Arizona parents, but other groups weren’t so lucky.

A new USA Archery policy requiring each coach to purchase a Coaching Pass for $20 was instituted the week prior to the tournament. Archers had to designate their coaches prior to a coach being allowed to obtain credentials. Most coaches were bona-fide archery coaches or instructors, but many parents without coaching knowledge or certification were allowed to buy their way into the archer/coach areas.

ARIZONA RESULTS
FITA RANKING ROUND:
JOADs shot four 36-arrow rounds at a single distance; Seniors and Masters shot a four-distance FITA for the Target National Championship title. Notable were Spencer Yee’s and Brian Bullis’ continuation of their year’s dominant performances, Danielle Reynolds’ massive improvement from the prior year, and Karissa Yamaguchi’s blazing first day results where she led the 47 person Cadet women’s field by 8 points. The male Cadet Recurve field was 77 archers, making Andrew Mateo’s finish exceptional. Seth Waldrop did as well as possible following bow structural issues discovered the week of Nationals, and Adam Stringham did well in his last national tournament before entering Brigham Young University. Nathan Yamaguchi finished well shooting reduced poundage following his fall 2010 shoulder surgery, and Gary Yamaguchi improved greatly upon his last place finish last year, shooting his first 1200+ FITA and finishing just behind 1984 Olympian Glenn Myers in the 50+ Masters National Target Championships.

OPEN TEAM AND JOAD TEAM ROUNDS:
Adam Stringham and Danielle Reynolds (3rd, Open Women’s Compound), with Allie Blazek of Colorado

Nathan Yamaguchi (3rd, Open Men’s Recurve), with Daniel and Sean McLaughlin of Ohio

The mandatory JOAD Team Round was called off after the 3rd end of 4, due to an extreme heat index. This upset some parents and competitors, but turned out to have been a wise decision. About an hour later, a sudden freak thunderstorm generating winds of 80 mph struck the field without warning, blowing over all the target stands, demolishing the tents and shade structures, knocking down outhouses, and even knocking the scoring trailer off its foundation. If the team rounds had continued even one more round, the field would have been populated at the time of the thunderstorm. Thanks to Teresa Iaconi’s urgent plea for help posted on Facebook, approximately 70 volunteers showed up within an hour to help reconstruct the field. Butler County’s field crew was extremely well organized and immediately set to work putting the main tents back up, clearing demolished and broken tents and target stands, and organizing the volunteer labor force. By dark, the entire field was set back up and ready to go. The only detrimental effect on the archers was the loss of many of the practice targets.

JOAD OR / GRAND NATIONAL CHAMPION:
Danielle Reynolds narrowly missed out on winning her Final OR match with Hunter Jackson, shooting her final shoot-off arrow about 1/16” further out from the center. Still, her 2nd place in the FITA gave her the JOAD Grand National Championship title!!! Nathan Yamaguchi gets kudos for his sportsmanship and integrity for returning a 2nd place Grand National Championship plaque, and asking that the placements be recomputed. They were, putting Nathan in 4th place instead of 2nd.

FITA scores are reported first, followed by placements for the FITA, the Elimination round, and the combined Grand National Championship (FITA placement + ER placement + 1 team round participation point) below. JOADs shot a single distance FITA, whereas the adults and masters shot a 4-distance FITA.

Spencer Yee (1389, 2nd and 3rd, 3rd in GNC, Bowman Male Compound)
Brian Bullis (1348, 1st and 4th, 2nd in GNC, Bowman Male Recurve)
Danielle Reynolds (1331, 2nd and 2nd, 1st in GNC, Cadet Female Compound)
Karissa Yamaguchi (1222, 5th and 7th, 5th in GNC, Cadet Female Recurve)
Andrew Mateo (1243, 6th and 4th, 5th in GNC, Cadet Male Recurve)
Seth Waldrop (1255, 24th and 17th, 23rd in GNC, Cadet Male Compound)
Adam Stringham (1313, 9th and 9th, 10th in GNC, Junior Male Compound)
Nathan Yamaguchi (1229, 5th and 2nd, 4th in GNC, Junior Male Recurve)
Gary Yamaguchi (1233, 2nd and 9th, Masters Male 50+ Recurve)
All in all, this tournament was another successful event. Valuable tournament experience was gained by all who participated, and the small group of Arizona archers represented our state and its archery programs well.

JOAD MEETING
The USAA Annual meeting was held on June 28 at the host hotel. The main discussion revolved about two currently proposed options to change Cadet (15 to 17 year old) and Junior (18 to 20 year old) USAT ranking procedures from the current way of ranking. A paraphrased version is given here -- Interested and affected readers are directed to the USAA web pages for the actual text.

Option A: This proposed option separates Juniors from the Senior (over 20 years old) field. Cadets and Juniors will have a limited number of ranking tournaments to be chosen from available events. Juniors will not be allowed to compete with the Seniors during elimination rounds, unless they sign up as a Senior archer, in which case they are not eligible for Junior qualification at that tournament. Qualifying tournaments include: Indoor Nationals plus two additional finishes. The reduced number of qualifying Cadet and Junior USAT tournaments reduces the total number of tournaments that many archers will travel to and may reduce costs. However, it also requires all archers to attend these few tournaments irrespective of school schedules, geography, and other mitigating factors. No discussion was held regarding the criteria for choosing which tournaments would be designated as the qualifying tournaments.

Option B: This proposal combines Junior and Senior categories into an Open category. Cadets would presumably remain unchanged. Approximately the same number of events will be held as are currently offered. How the Junior USAT rankings and Senior USAT rankings will be determined is still unclear. The status quo would be to allow each Junior archer to declare themselves as either a Senior or a Junior USAT member if qualified for both. Another proposal ranks the top 8 as Senior USAT, with the next 5 Juniors as Junior USAT. Proponents of Option B believe this will create better opportunities for top Junior archers to develop into top international competitors. On the other hand, entering the Senior ranks at the outset may be intimidating to less proficient JOAD archers.

The alternative to Options A and B, of course, is to maintain the status quo. This year, there were five regional ranking tournaments for JOADs plus Indoor Nationals. Jake Kaminski suggested adding USAA National Field as a qualifying ranking event.

Discussion was also held regarding holding JOAD Nationals together with Target Nationals. One of the subjects brought up was the subject of having non-US citizens entered in the elimination rounds of a US Cadet and Junior ranking tournament. (Taiwanese and Canadian archers typically attend the Target Nationals and shoot in a "guest category", but they typically do not attend JOAD Nationals when it is held as a separate event.)

end

Record temperatures over 100 degrees greeted the largest field of JOAD Archers ever in the 2012 Arizona State JOAD Outdoor Archery Championships, sponsored by Arizona Archery Enterprises (AAE). 51 JOAD Archers from 7 Arizona Clubs and one California club came together at the Paseo Vista Archery Range, April 21 & 22 in Chandler, AZ. Tournament format was 144 arrows -single distance, shot over two days and a “Team Round” for all archers. The format is the same one scheduled to be used at the Easton National JOAD Championships, Hamilton Ohio in June.

Day one started at 6:30 am for field set-up with a large field crew from the host club, Paseo Vista Archery Club. Check-in and equipment inspection began at 8:00. All Archers received a gift bag from the Tournament Sponsor, Arizona Archery Enterprises (AAE) the archers were very prepared and had a great grasp of the tournament process, thanks to the great work of club leadership and coaches.

In the afternoon of day one, Team rounds were held. Using the 72 arrow score of all participating archers, they were ranked into one group using a handicapped ranking system that took into account the different distances. 14 teams were formed using the ranking system. Teams had a mix of recurve and compound archers, Bowman, cadets or Cubs Archers and Male or Female Archers. Truly mixed teams! All Archers shot at 30 meter using an 80cm – 10 ring face. The format had a Winners bracket and a Consolation Bracket, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place recognition in both brackets. A special thanks to our Team Round Coordinators, Sheri Rhodes and Bob Pian. Their expertise enabled things to run smoothly. The Day ended at 4:30 pm.

Day Two started the same as day one, with official practice at 8:30 am and scoring beginning at 9:20 am. By 1:30 pm the temperature had reached 105 degrees. Only the final 72 arrow round was shot on Sunday, there were no team rounds. In spite of the heat, there were potentially two state records set. These are being verified. The tournament ended at 2:30 pm with awards presented to 36 athletes.

The tournament would like to thank Arizona Archery Enterprises (AAE) for their tournament sponsorship. And providing all the wonderful AAE product that was given away during the tournament.

Thank you to the City of Chandler for providing such a great Archery venue.

Thank you to all of the Paseo Vista Club members for the great tournament support.

Finally to all the Coaches, Parents and Archers for their continued support of Archery in Arizona.

See every next year!

2012 Spring Range Cleanup Day

The Paseo Vista Archery Range is back in top form thanks to the hard work of the many volunteers who turned out for our Spring 2012 Range Cleanup Day. About 25 volunteers including JOAD team members, parents, coaches, and family and friends showed up ready to work on Sunday April 14. With all this help we were able to recore the target butts, clean out and reorganize the storage unit, rework and recover all the hunter targets and restripe the entire range in just a few hours. Special thanks to the City of Chandler for tackling the weeds before we arrived.

Team JOAD Members Make USAT Teams

After a long 2011 tournament season, all the hard work, travel and money has paid off for two of Paseo Vista Archery Club's Team JOAD Archers. Danielle Reynolds, who started shooting in Arizona 4-H competitions and then came to shoot with the Paseo Club made the USAT (United States Archery Team) Cadet Women's Compound Team. Danielle is currently Paseo's only Team JOAD compound Archer. Danielle is currently being coached by Paseo Head Coach Gary Yamaguchi and USA Archery High Performance Coach Mel Nichols,

Nathan Yamaguchi continues to be in the top of USA Archery Dream Team program despite suffering a shoulder injury late in the season. Nathan made the USAT Cadet Men's Recurve Team. Nathan is spending his down time helping coach many of the new JOAD Archers in the club. Nathan is coached by Paseo Head Coach Gary Yamaguchi and USA Archery High Performance Coach Mel Nichols.

Congratulations to both Danielle and Nathan for this great achievement!
New Paseo Web Site

We are always looking for ways to improve what we offer to our members and to the Archery Community. As you can see we have a new look to the Paseo web site. This new site is a little bit cleaner and will enable us to better serve our members.

The new site will enable us to better track membership, be able to send out email to our members and allow members to renew their memberships. It will also allow TEAM JOAD Members to renew their monthly dues. The web site allows us to manage tournaments, leagues and any volunteer projects that may come up.

We are still learning all the capabilities, so we hope you will see an improvement over the next few months. If you have any questions, please contact any of the Paseo Board of Directors. Thanks
